Articulate
The "Articulate" section contains much of the work that the teacher must do ahead of time. The documents included in this section are designed to provide a road map for both students and the teacher. These documents will drive the learning and the creation of formative and summative assessments. This section serves as a starting point!
The documents included are a unit "KUD" standing for "Know, Understand and Do". Often, a unit KUD is attached to a course KUD. The course KUD would provide a much larger "grain size" in terms of an overall target for learning. The KUD outlines exactly what the student needs to know, be able to understand and be able to do by the end of the unit. Most would say a KUD provides a glimpse at what the student ought to look like at the end of a unit (or course/semester/year in the case of a course KUD).
Also included are the unit learning targets and scales. These two document are more focuses and narrow than the unit KUD and certainly the course KUD. The learning targets are the "Do's" of the KUD. These are the skills (for PH they are ESL's and NHES standards) that teachers want students to display achievement in during the unit. The learning target is a 3 on a 4 pt scale and shows a high level of achievement. The unit scales found below also provide level 1, 2 and 4 targets.
If I connect this to the world of athletics, the Articulate component might be most important. I have always done better in a run when I knew exactly where the finish line was and what it would look like when I got there. I have always done better when there was a clear end to the practice session. I didn't do so well when the finish line was ambiguous or when the session would be over when the coach felt like it. Students in a classroom are no different. They want to be able to see a finish line and know what finished looks like. KUD's, Learning Targets and Scales provide that for them.
