Communication
The "Communication" tab contains information on
how a student’s progress in both academic achievement and habits is recorded,
packaged and then delivered back to the student (and families). That information will be collected and
organized in a standards-based-grading platform. The platform (JumpRope here at
CVU) will need to have all of the aforementioned academic and habits standards
up-loaded previously. Achievement and
progress will be collected based off from various assignments (tests, quizzes, re-takes, class activities, projects, presentations...etc.) and
noted as a 1, 2, 3 or 4 (or something in-between). It will be important to
ensure that students understand what a 1 means for example, and what can be
done to progress further.
It will be paramount that student progress is separated into two distinct categories: achievement and habits. A student’s grade within a unit or class will be based on their achievement and progress within the 9th grade standards. Grades will be based on achievement in academic standards for example, a student’s ability to pull evidence out of a text. Feedback will be provided on habits of learning standards but will have little or no impact on the student’s grade (for example: taking part in a class discussion).
Communication home will be through e-mail at the end of each unit. That communication should occur approximately every 4 to 6 weeks. Should a unit last longer than 8 weeks, a unit "progress report" should be sent home at the 4 week point.

Grade Book Description:
The grade book has really transformed from a data collection device to a teaching tool (it still does collect data though as well). The JumpRope system that we use allows me to enter student achievement based on standard learning targets. It also allows me to track progress and identify trends in either a specific student or even a class. This in turn can inform my instruction.
Habits & Achievement:
Here is a link to the Habits of Learning Targets. Students will be provided feedback with their progress in these areas, but it will not impact their grade (adopted from the Nichols Core & Global Standards Summit work in 2014).
Here is a link to the Achievement Standards and Targets for Personal Health and for Project Adventure. A students progress (and in the end, grade) will be determined by their level of achievement in these areas.

Reporting Progress:
When reporting progress student achievement will be split into two distinct categories: academic progress and habits progress. Each academic standard will be displayed separately so that specific achievement can be determined. Habits of learning will be in a separate section. In most cases, a cumulative course letter grade will be at the top of the report. This JumpRope Progress Report will be sent home at the end of each unit.
